Tonight I have been playing with epoxy and fillers just experimenting and getting to know the components and mixing options. As I’ve said before, this is a whole new area for me and I don’t want to rush into it and make silly mistakes.I am using the following Sicomin products:
- Epoxy Resin SR5550
- Fast Hardener SD 5505
- Treecell Cellulose Microfibres (Used to make structural adhesive)
- Silicell Colloidal Silica (Used as a thickening/thixotropic agent)
- Glasscell 10 Glass Microballoons (An ultra lightweight filler)
Following advice I am using a small set of digital scales to accurately measure quantities, it seems universally accepted that this method is more accurate than the ‘by volume’ method. At present I only have a small set of scales that weigh up to 200grams (the mixing ratio for SR5550 and SD5505 is 100g/29g) however I will have to invest in a larger set when I come to mix greater quantities. I have coated and glued a few pieces of ply and douglas fir to see how long they take to cure and what sort of strength I can achieve. The pieces I did last night were still slightly tacky tonight. I have posted some photos in the album to save cluttering up the journal too much.
