BIG NEWS – Launch Plans & an Invitation
OK, here it is, no false dawns this time, it’s happening.
‘Gleda’ will be launched from Weir Quay Boatyard at the end of May. There’s still a lot of detail to sort out but here’s the plan:
‘Gleda’ will arrive at Weir Quay in the early part of week commencing 19th May, she’ll be assembled in the yard over the following days and then craned into a mud berth alongside the pontoons for rigging, hopefully early part of week commencing 26th.
We’ll have a launch party on the evening of Saturday 31st May and on Sunday 1st June ‘Gleda’ will be ‘officially’ launched.
AN INVITATION – I’d love to share this special time with as many of my friends and supporters as possible, if you’d like to lend a hand the week before launch there’ll be plenty to do, you can just come for the party or just for the launch day, whatever you fancy.
Weir Quay Boatyard is on the Devon side of the river Tamar, a couple of miles upstream from the famous Tamar Bridges that connect Devon and Cornwall near the historic Naval city of Plymouth.
We had a good feeling about Weir Quay the first time we visited and the folks there have been really helpful and supportive even when I had to postpone the launch last year. Not only are they providing facilities for the launch but they’ve also supplied us with a swinging mooring for the Summer, so it’ll be ‘Gledas’ first home.

Although set in a peaceful rural location Weir Quay is easily accessible by road ( well lanes actually) and there’s a direct rail link to Plymouth from the nearby village of Bere Ferrers. There’s plenty of accommodation in the area.
The boatyard website weir-quay.com has lots of information about the area and facilities.
So there it is, exciting times ahead, lots to sort out before May, but it’s all doable and done it will be!
I hope to see you there!
UPDATE: 11th February 2014
I’ve spoken to Weir Quay and they have confirmed that deepwater visitor moorings will be available for any boats that wish to attend the launch.
UPDATE: April 2014
Transport is booked to take ‘Gleda’ down to Weir Quay on the 19th & 20th May. I’ll be at the yard full time after that. I’ve spoken to Hanneke and both she and James are planning to be at the launch.
