969Hrs – Making Stringers
A good work session tonight. I decided to get the 8 long upper stringers glued together, I don’t need them yet but I wanted to get them ready in advance so that by the time I do the epoxy adhesive in the scarf joints will have gained maximum strength. The weather is dry and quite warm at the moment as well and I can’t count on it being so in a few weeks!
The job went well, I laid all the stringers out with polythene under the joints to prevent them sticking to the floor, pre coated the joints with neat epoxy and then when it had gone tacky, glued them all with a nice filled mix, clamping over polythene and checking they were nice and tight. They all look good.
When I was working with the lower stringers I had a couple of breakages where the timber split as I was trying to position them. Handling these quite light, highly flexible pieces of timber some 11m (38ft) long is a bit of a challenge singlehanded. I will have to think of a way to mke it easier this time, particularly as I will be working up to 8ft off the ground. I don’t fancy balancng on a set of step ladders with one of these over my head!
