2569Hrs- Starting To Hatch
It looks as if Winter hasn’t finished with us yet and if the forecast is correct I could be back working in the galley soon. It was noticeably colder today but I was keen to have a play with the hatch coamings and get clear in my head what I needed to do.
For the main companionways and forward hatches I’m going to use the stainless tube hinge & slide method. Scott Williams has used this method on ‘Element II’ and Dave Halliday is using it on his production of the Ariki design. You can see it in action on his video below. I’ve found some stainless tube that’s going for scrap in the yard I’ll be able to use and I really like the simplicity of this design.
For now though I have the coamings to build first so I made a start on the gas locker. I’m planning to add a second coaming as per the Maurice Griffiths design to keep the water out.
I think you’ll be very happy with the double coaming MG design. I plan to use that on my Tiki 30. I built one as a test on a tear drop camping trailer and the hatch never leaked even traveling down the road at 60mph in heavy rain.
Your boat is looking great!!!
Take care
Edward
