1077Hrs – I’ll Level With You
These beam troughs have been a bitch! I really hadn’t anticipated how difficult it would be to get them all level in three directions on each hull and level to each other on both hulls. Just when I thought I’d cracked it I’d take another measure, or drop the spirit level on, or fire the laser around and suddenly I seemed to go right back to square one. When I arrived at the barn this morning I fully expected to make some final checks and then disassemble them all to start gluing and glassing instead of which I started all over again! The hours just seemed to slip by and I got somewhat heated (not just as a result of my frustration but also because we have temperatures in the mid 20’s (High 70’s)). I measured, adjusted, measured again, used the water level, spirit level, laser plumb and the Mk1 eyeball. I borrowed some long straight metal tube to drop across the troughs and finally, I reckoned things were as good as they were going to get. I asked for a second opinion from Richard my barn landlord and he figured all looked good to him but, just to be sure, did I want him to set up his rotary laser and find out! I did want to be sure so that’s what we did. I was mighty chuffed when his laser confirmed that ( after a slight lowering of the stern part of the starboard hull) they were all within a few millimetres. Thanks Richard! I called it a night knowing that this painful task is behind me and I can now concentrate on getting them all glued, glassed and finished. Unfortunately though the new job means that will have to wait for a few days.
